How can I improve my stamina?

I'm in highschool and I always have a problem with my stamina in cardiovascular activities. It's really annoying, I have worse stamina than people who have never even jogged a meter in their lives. Its like I'm born with below average lung capacity. Btw I have pretty bad asthma but I don't know if this is a factor. I try so hard to keep running even after I'm tired but it feels like torture like my ribcage is going to explode and I can't. Am I just a pansy or is there something I can do to improve my stamina?

I'm in highschool too and I'm also on the cross country team. I also have pretty bad asthma as well, just work your butt off during the summer BUT DO IT IN MODERATION!!!! I don't want anyone dying because of an attack based on my advice. Try doing 1/4 of a mile each day for a week. and then add on 1/4 each week after that. Don't try doing a 5 mile run right off.
Reply:When I had this problem, I had to find something that I enjoyed that was a little physically demanding, I suggest that you find a sport you really like to play. Or you can try getting a bike. They don't require more energy than regular walking, but its really fun to bike on trails, or even on roads. Biking is a great cardiovascular activity. If you live in a city like Toronto, there are many bike trails and resources.

Reply:The American College of Sports Medicine offers guidelines for cardiovascular, flexibility and resistance training. The guidelines are flexible enough to allow you to pick your own exercises but have enough structure to get you going when you first start out. They are pretty easy to follow and will make your workout easier and more efficient.
