I'm 14. I throw mid 80s fastball, some with movement. I also like throwing a 65-70 mph circle change that moves a little bit. Once in a while i throw a curve or slider, i dont know if breaking pitches would have any effect on stamina though. How many pitches should i be able to throw in one game at my age?

Focus on learning how to change speeds and fool hitters in that way. If you're really telling the truth about your fastball, then it sounds like you have some potential. A slider is supposedly easier to throw than a curveball, but I'd use it only sparingly, because it can put some undue pressure on your still developing pitching arm. At your age, stick to the heater and the change as your bread and butter, and use the breaking stuff very rarely. Best of luck.
Reply:Pitch counts have come into public opinion since there have been so many arm injuries to young players. I would make sure your dumb@** coach who let you throw 139 pitches aware of the fact that that will never happen again. Even though I am sure you are a competitor it is not very smart on his part to risk you ruining a career. If you are throwing mid 80's at 14 then chances are you are going to have an opportunity to pitch at a higher level if you keep progressing. You have to surround yourself with people that care about your future. I have never seen a 14 year old earn a college scholarship so the chances are there were no scouts at your game. What I am trying to say is don't risk your future by getting caught up in the moment of a current competition. And, to answer your question, no more than 85 pitches should be thrown in a game at your age. You have to consider that you probably will throw another 75 or so during warmups and between innings, so the number you actually throw to batters during the game rises drastically. Curve balls do not effect your stamina, but could result in your arm stiffining up. I'd make sure that I throw a curve ball with proper mechanics and that I throw them in moderation. I'd throw no more than 10-12 of them during the course of a game at your age.
Reply:sorry but there is now way you throw mid 80's sorry...
I was pretty muscular and 6'4" when I was 14 and the fastest I threw was 79 at 14... I thought it was 80's to, but I didn't throw mid 80's until I was 16... that's faster than you think.
well, I wouldn't go over 160, depending on your size, but it's not really a set number, when your arm feels tired; that's when you need to stop. but your arm shouldn't hurt until you throw about 120+ pitches.
If it does, then your probably not pushing off the mound enough with your legs, and pulling down with your abs and following threw.
I know, it sounds wrong but I had shoulder surgery when I was 15 from pitching, I had a hill sachs lesion, so I had to learn a lot about throwing limitations
Reply:yeah... wow if you can throw 80+ at 14... that's great... i think you probably have the arm strength to go 80 or 85 pitches... and that is good every once in a while to build your strength, but i would stay around 60-70 most times depending on how your arm feels, you're still young and too much throwing can be really hard on your arm... also, a few curves occasionally, thrown right, won't hurt you, but i wouldn't throw it more than 10 times and outing, and i wouldn't mess w/ a slider quite yet, it's a little harder on your forearm
Reply:I'd say with good rest probably around 70 pitches a game. But take care of your arm. You've been really blessed to be able to throw a mid 80's fastball when you are 14, so dont blow it. If you arm hurts, dont pitch.
Reply:well i would say if you want to keep pitching through college then lay off the curve balls and sliders for a couple years and throw about 65 to 75 pitches a game. but really it depends on how good your arm feels. trust me when i was your age i threw way to much and hurt my arm. it took me two years to rehabilitate my arm to where i could throw without pain
Reply:At 14, no more than 80 pitches. Just stick with the fast ball and circle change.
At your age, throwing breaking pitches is too much wear and tear on your elbow. Focus on perfecting your change up.
A good fast ball and a change up is all your need to be an effective player!
Use your breaking pitches unexpectedly just to keep the hitters honest and off balance.
