Does diet soda (or other carbonated beverages) reduce your stamina for running?

I have been told by more than one person that drinking sodas or carbonated beverages reduces your stamina when running or exercising. I've been told that something about the carbonation prevents your blood from transporting oxygen well. I've never been able to find any reliable reference to confirm or refute this. Can anyone cite a research article or website that can shed light on this?

Does diet soda (or other carbonated beverages) reduce your stamina for running?
no it doesn't directly decrease your stamina, but drinking soda, especially diet, can have really bad effects on your training and make it harder to become fit. i say especially diet because most of those drinks have so many more chemicals in them then the regular kind so as to keep the calories down. now these chemicals, it has proven, can actually make you feel hungrier which will in turn make it harder for you to keep a good diet. so if you're planning on seriously training and becoming good at running, giving up carbonated drinks is a must.
Reply:THis is a myth. Your digestive and respiratory system are seperate.
